The Butera and Bellis families lived on Mill Street along the banks of the Culver Brook in Branchville for more than 25 years. They raised children in their homes and welcomed grandchildren. They also knew about the flooding issues of that particular bend of the brook. But on Aug. 28, 2011, when Hurricane Irene hit the county, the brook swelled over its banks and swamped the two homes, leaving the Buteras virtual prisoners on an island of their own, and the Bellis family drenched in flood waters that filled their basement and infiltrated the first floor of their home.A year later, both families have returned to their homes. For Bob and Gail Butera, the raging waters that surrounded their home and washed away their front yard, basement and driveway have calmed, and the brook is back to normal levels."The grounds have been fixed up and we are almost done cleaning out the basement, but we don think we are going to keep anything down there anymore," Bob said. "We moved the washer and dryer upstairs and just keep the garage for outdoor things now."Bob Butera credited the borough and the Sussex County Sheriff Department, who brought inmates to the river to help clear out the rocks that had been washed downstream and contributed to the flooding.During the worst of the storm, the Buteras were stranded, alone on an island of their home, surrounded by angry floodwaters that ripped a 6 foot deep trench between their front yard and rescuers. Fire crews began to make plans to bring in a rescue boat to pull the couple off the island home, but Tony Daniels, the son in law of the Buteras decided not to risk it."It was very dangerous by that time.
